Breakfast:

It was BulletProof Coffee again today, this time with Sugar Free Cookie Dough syrup.  I was in training all morning so the caffeine was definitely needed, as was the fullness from the fat in the BPC, since we didn’t have lunch until noon.

Lunch:

We had a short time for lunch and I didn’t have any more leftovers, so I bought a plate from the cafeteria in our building.  Baked chicken with a side salad and green beans plus more caffeine to get through the rest of the day.

Dinner:

It was fairly late by the time I got home, too late to cook a whole meal, so I finished off the BBQ leftovers from yesterday with some more cheese.  The ribs were tender and delicious but sweet, which makes me suspect a sugary sauce was added while cooking, upping the actual carb count.  The down side of purchasing food is that you don’t know for sure what was put in (part of why I got the salad instead of coleslaw at lunch), which makes it harder to count the carbs.

Snack:

I had this snack almost right after dinner, so this is a good example of eating to a craving rather than because I’m actually hungry.  I thought of this before I decided to eat it, but gave in to the craving anyway.  I sat right next to containers of Skittle and M&M snack packs all afternoon (and that chocolate smell travels) without eating a single one or any of the cake that was still at the office.  That on top of shark week meant I definitely having some chocolate tonight and decided to have peanut butter with it.

Summary:

Despite the cave late in the evening, my carbs weren’t too bad for the day.  30 total carbs minus the 9 fiber and 7 erythritol from the chocolate puts me at about 14 net carbs for the day.  Since I suspect there was sugar on the ribs, I’m good with even 30 net carbs for the day despite it being a bit over my goal of 20.

My steps were fairly good today, since I went into the office but drove, which cut out my walk to and from the train station and office, and sat in training all day with no opportunities to go out and walk.  I did go walk downtown a bit after work, which most of the steps came from.

Breakfast:

I had to grab and go this morning so I grabbed this Strawberry & Cream Premier Protein shake from the fridge and drank it once I got to work and my stomach started talking to me.  I did also have about a third of a 5hr Energy before I left the house but didn’t take time to scan or take a pic.

Snack Pt. 1:

Today was the celebration for July birthdays in my office so there was fruit and cake and, lucky for me, some cheese and summer sausage with crackers.  I got some meat and cheese and ran quickly back to my desk before I got anything else.

Lunch:

Today I brought the last serving of the Beef Stroganoff I made last week for my lunch.  If I ate the steak in little pieces it was easier to get down and otherwise was good.  I had the Powerade Zero with and after my meal.

Snack Pt. 2:

The mid-afternoon slump hit me as I’m still catching up from two poor nights of sleep so I ran downstairs and bought a Cherry Coke Zero.  I also had that cake on my mind so I had a few sugar free candies.  A kind coworker also told me it wasn’t that good of cake so that helped too.

Dinner:

I did some running around after work, plus I took the train, so I got back near home pretty late and grabbed some BBQ on the way to the house.  I only ate about half of the meat pictured and three wedges of the gouda, which I forgot to include in MFP.  I also only had half of the soda.

Summary:

My counts were really good today, with the total carbs only at 12, 4 of which were fiber, putting my net carbs at only 8g.  Yay me.  The highest carb item was the breakfast drink, which is why I really only do them when I’m crunched for time.

My steps were super good today, mostly helped by walking to and from the train station and the office.  I also did some walking during the day and meandered a bit when leaving the office, as I wasn’t going to make the very next train and there was no big rush for the one after.

Progress:

I weighed this morning, before I was even willing to turn on lights, lol.  I’m partially recovered from my high carb Sunday but not quite back down to my pre-Sunday weight of 216.  I’m getting there though and sometimes falling off that wagon helps remind you how important it is to stay on.

Lunch:

I fell asleep on the couch last night and woke up around 5 to move to the bed.  Not sure if I didn’t sleep well or just restarting the sleep cycle but I slept until almost noon.  I was out the door almost as soon as I woke up so late afternoon I ran though a McDonalds and got a chicken wrap and Diet Coke.  I got a fork with the intent of eating the chicken and lettuce off the tortilla but was constantly driving, so after at least 30 min I just ate it as-is.

Dinner:

When I got home, my brother stated he wanted pizza, as it had been a while since we’d gotten any.  I originally asked him to order me some plain wings but, considering the consumed tortilla, decided to just share in the pizza.  I hadn’t realized he also ordered the garlic knots and some delicious cinnamon pull-aparts, each of which I also had some of.

Snack:

Having slept in, I was up late and, considering the carbs I’d already consumed, decided to indulge in a rice krispy treat, with peanut butter of course.

Summary:

I’m actually surprised the carbs only came to 220, considering all the bread I ate.  It’s amazing to think that this is a typical day for many and used to be for me (not every day but probably similar counts).  The fiber only came to 8, still leaving me with 212 total carbs for the day.

The steps aren’t great either, but that’s what being in the car all day will do.

For me, the real trick is not getting derailed and getting back on the wagon, so that will be my goal for the coming week.

Breakfast:

I didn’t get much sleep last night so the day started with a BulletProof Coffee, extra strong, with Hazelnut syrup, sugar free.

Snack:

I received this drink in my recent Keto Krate and it is supposed to help you get back into ketosis.  Since I had pizza etc. yesterday, I figured this would be a perfect opportunity to try it.  I thought the flavor was good but a bit strong, which adding water helped with.  It didn’t sit well after I drank it, possibly due to being on an empty stomach other than the BPC, which is mostly fats.

Lunch:

I brought leftover Beef Stroganoff as my lunch, together with more caffeine.  It reheated pretty well although I can only tell there are onions in it because I know I added them.

Dinner:

I got home somewhat late and wasn’t that hungry or interested in making anything, so I grabbed this protein bar, which came in  last Keto Krate.  It had a strong dark chocolate flavor, so I decided to eat it with peanut butter to help cut it, and add to my protein.  The two were pretty good together.

Summary:

My carbs are pretty high today, seeing as everything I had was low in carbs until the end, when I got lazy, lol.  My two highest carb items were the protein bar and the peanut butter.  Luckily they were also both high in fiber, so the net carbs only come to 23, which isn’t bad.  There may be some sugar alcohols in that as well.

My steps were pretty good since I walked around downtown for a couple of hours when I got off work.

Breakfast:

I wanted some eggs and bacon this morning, and had both in the fridge, so I cooked the former and heated the latter.  I also needed some coffee but you’re not supposed to double up on the BulletProof Coffee and actual food, so I just added some heavy cream and sugar free vanilla sweetener instead.  It was pretty good.

Snack:

Technically, this counted as lunch.  Late afternoon I was feeling hungry and had the peanut butter and half a Lily’s bar handy.  This is an old pic, so both the peanut butter and chocolate are the wrong ones, lol.  I still had half of a flavored water from yesterday, also a different flavor, that I drank through the afternoon as well.

I went out in the evening and headed back too late to cook, so I stopped an an In-n-Out burger that I passed (don’t tell my fellow Texans).  Last time, I ordered “Animal style” thinking it was “Protein style”, which is a lettuce wrap so I wanted to try getting the right thing this time.  I thought it was pretty good, very cheesy, especially with the grilled onions instead of fresh.  Not sure how it came to 11 carbs, but that’s how it came from the official restaurant list.

Summary:

My carbs were higher than I would like, mostly due to the peanut butter, of which I ate more of even after the chocolate was done.  My total carbs were 43, minus the 26 fiber, leaves 17 net carbs, which is better than I expected.

My steps were really good for a work-from-home day.  I did go to a park and walk twice around a pond, which contributed most of that.  When I got home, I also power mowed the front yard before it got dark, so that added some on as well.

July 19, 2017 Food Log

Breakfast:

I started my day with BulletProof Coffee, this time with English Toffee sugar free syrup to sweeten and flavor.  My small mug was in the wash and I discovered the large one has a crack, so I had to pour it into this shaker bottle and make due.  It still tasted good but the fats don’t mix in as well.

Lunch:

I had breakfast late, around 10, and wasn’t hungry until late afternoon.  Work was super busy so I didn’t have a chance to make anything until I got off at 3:30.  I put some slices of cheese on to bake and mixed up this tuna salad, just tuna, mayo, relish, and egg.  I went for a walk to decompress and let the cheese crisp and tuna chill.  I ate all the cheese chips but only half of the tuna salad, so I have the other half for later this week.

Snack:

My Keto Krate came in, so I had to try something from it.  I went with these Peanut Butter Cookies by Fat Snax, for only 1 net carb per cookie.  Nothing compares to regular cookies but they were edible, with a decent flavor.

Summary:

I think this is my lowest carb day in recent weeks, with only 8 total carbs, four of which were fiber, leaving only 4 net carbs.  My fat was a little low, surprising with the butter and mayo, but overall my ratios were good.  My steps were excellent for a work from home day, mostly due to the walk I went for after work.  Hopefully tomorrow comes out as good as today.

July Keto Krate

Christmas in July!  My Keto Krate arrived today and it’s always a highlight of my month, with so many new low carb options to explore.  The hard part is always deciding what to try first, or not trying it all at once.

All of the included products, along with some basic info is listed below, along with my initial thoughts, and I’ll add in reviews as I try each item.

Fat Snax – Peanut Butter Cookies

6 total carbs – 2 fat and 3 sugar alcohols = 1 net carb per cookie (2 cookies per package)

These look really good and I selected them as the first item to try.  Peanut Butter have always been my favorite type of cookie, although I would usually eat half the dough before cooking.  They’re also fairly high in fat, thus the name, with 9g, so they should be filling.

My expectations may have been too high, as nothing compares to real cookies.  These were not as light as I would hope but were nice and soft.  They were not as sweet as normal cookies and the peanut butter flavor could have been stronger.  Also, some of the peanut bits were salty, which some might like but was a little odd to me for a cookie.  TL:DR – I’d eat them again but probably won’t purchase any.

Keto Brownie – Chocolate Almond Crunch

20 total carbs – 16 fiber = 4 net carbs

These also look really good and the main ingredient is almond butter, which I do like and increases my hopes for this.  The summary states there are no GMO’s or sugar alcohols, which is good if those don’t agree with you.  I didn’t select it as my first as the name of “Nutrition Bar” makes it sound more like a meal replacement than a dessert and I’d already had dinner.  I’m typically disappointed by “protein bars” so I’m hoping this turns out well.

This was okay, more dark-chocolaty than I expected.  It had occasional chunks for texture, which was nice.  It was a little oily but not too bad.  I ate mine with some peanut butter and it was pretty good that way.

Quest Nutrition – Chocolate Cereal Bar

17 total carbs – 7 fiber & 8 Allulose = 2 net carbs

This the the third crate in a row that included one of these cereal protein bars, one of each flavor, and I’m not mad.  I bought a whole batch of these after the first one so I’ve already tried this and know it’s pretty good, as are the other flavors.  This is actually one of the only protein bars I’ve enjoyed eating and would buy again, rather than just getting through; the cereal texture really makes a difference.

I had this with some peanut butter too, lol.  I still really like these new Quest Cereal bars.  They are a bit on the sweet side but have really great flavor and a completely different texture than typical protein bars.  These are much more reminiscent of actual cereal/breakfast bars.

Limited Labs – Strawberry Lemonade Sports Drink

0 total carbs so 0 net carbs

The description states this is “The first ready-to-drink form of exogenous ketones” and suggests drinking it in the morning, before or during training, or when you need to focus.  The bottle also suggest drinking before a workout.  It also says this drink will help you get back into ketosis.  I went ahead and threw it into the fridge and am excited about the flavor, it sounds like it’ll taste good.  I might save for next time I cheat and need to get back at it.

This came in handy as I had a carby day last Sunday when my brother ordered pizza.  I had this as a mid-morning drink on Monday.  The flavor is good but strong, to where I made a face and shook my head on the first few sips.  I poured about half a cup of water into mine and that helped a lot.  This followed some BPC so it didn’t sit well on the otherwise empty stomach but it was okay.  No weird grainy or powdery mouth-feel to it.

Keto Love – Carrot Cake Almond Butter

8 total carbs – 4 fiber = 4 net carbs

This sounds delicious and I definitely need to get a low carb bagel out of the freezer to try it on.  The description says this brand, started by two sisters, has a variety of nut-based, keto friendly products so that is a website I’ll be checking out.

DiMario Foods – Garlic and Fennel Pork Stick

1 total carb – no fiber or SA = 1 net carb

While an interesting sounding flavor, I’ve never been a huge fan of beef sticks.  These sound good though and I’ll definitely give it a shot.

SuperPowered Nutrition – Original Steak Strip

1 total carb – no fiber or SA = 1 net carb

The description on these say they’re similar to jerky but more tender.  I’m super excited as I do like jerky and tender jerky sounds awesome.  I’d be happier if I’d received the “original” flavor though – mine was “Spirit Fire (Jalapeno)) and spicy and I don’t get along with spicy.  I’ll still have to try it though.

Pizootz – Bay Spice Peanuts

7.25 total carbs – 2.9 fiber = 4.35 net carbs (the whole bag is one serving and is a good size)

I’ve received these once before, a different flavor, and still haven’t opened them.  I’m not much of a peanut eater (despite the peanut butter addiction) and flavored ones don’t help, unless it’s honey roasted.  I’ll work to give these a shot as I’m curious what flavor Bay Spice really is.

Front Porch Pecans – Habanero BBQ Pecans

4 total carbs – 3 fiber = 1 net carb for 14 pieces (4 servings in the bag)

I received these in a prior krate as well, but just salted.  They were delicious and I think I ate the whole thing over two days.  I’ll probably try these but won’t get far due to the habanero flavor and my aversion to spicy foods.  I’ll definitely use the coupon code to purchase some other flavors though.

The insert with descriptions and info:

Recipe:

I like that they’re now including just a general low carb recipe, instead of trying to incorporate one of the krate items.

Bonus:

I noticed this nutrition label on the back of the box and thought it was cute.

July 18, 2017 Food Log

Breakfast:

I started the day with a batch of scrambled eggs and some sausage, slightly burnt.  A good start at only 2 total carbs, from the sausage.

Lunch:

I didn’t actually eat until after I was off work but I did have a little peanut before switching to outside chores and making dinner.  I was mostly proud that I did restrain myself to only two servings of the peanut butter, usually I just eat some and then guess but this time I worked to scoop out one TB at a time and take my time with it.  This is an earlier pic but basically the same thing besides the flavor of water.

Dinner:

Dinner:

It took forever but I managed to complete two recipes for dinner.  This is the second time I’ve made the Bacon Cheddar Broccoli Salad and I really like it.  My brother liked it this time too, as I steamed the broccoli a bit more and it was tenderer.  Cutting down all the broccoli into such small pieces, though, is very time consuming and I suggest doing that the day before, as the rest goes quick.  I also made some Beef Stroganoff, involving more cutting, of the beef.  I added a little xantham gum to thicken the sauce, rather than wait for it to boil out but followed the recipe otherwise.  It came out pretty good other than the meat being tough, which is the main reason I don’t usually do beef other than ground.

Summary:

The hard work paid off as my ratios are all pretty close to ideal.  My total carbs are at 27g, minus the 8g of fiber leaves me with 19g net carbs.  I did just pull the Stroganoff recipe out of MFP, rather than using the actual ingredients, so it’s possible that my counts are a little off but likely not by much.  I was surprised at hitting 30min of activity, it must’ve been all that chopping.  My steps were pretty good for a day at home though, due to the yard watering and moving the hose.

July 17, 2017 Food Log

Breakfast:

I came into the office today and enjoyed some BulletProof coffee once I arrived.  I’d have enjoyed it on the way but it leaked all over me instead.  Luckily I was able to drink most of it and it filled me well into the afternoon (the 10am start helped too).

Lunch:

I brought in my final freezer meal, another Cauliflower Fried Rice.  I didn’t eat it until around 3 but it was still delicious and filling.  I really enjoy these Core waters as well, they are Erythritol sweetened so they are sweet an

Snack:

Since I didn’t start work until almost 10am, that meant staying until after 6pm, so by late afternoon I was a little hungry again.  I ate the stick of cheese I had brought with me.  I also refilled my sugar-free candy tray and just had to get a serving of the Chick-O-Stick candies.  They’re not the right consistency as regular ones but still pretty good.

Dinner:

The reason for going in late and working late is that I was able to go straight to a Bar/Grill for Bingo Night.  I didn’t win anything but I did have a lot of fun and ate these chicken skewers with lots of veggies.  Oh, and a Long Island Tea.  The tea said it did include coke, so it was probably more carbs than the version I found but most ones I found were 0 carbs.

Summary:

Since I drove in, and was pretty busy, my steps weren’t as good as a usual go-into-work day.  My new policy of going up a floor to use the restroom is helping though, as I got in three floors.  I also try to walk the long way around when I do get up, but I have to get up first for that to work.

Besides that, my total carbs came in at 34g, which isn’t too bad considering it almost all came from vegetables.  That’s where the 16g of fiber come in as well, bringing my net carbs to only 18, yay.

Weight progress:

I forgot to weigh yesterday, with shopping planning and the surprise breakfast, so I weighed today.  I’m back under 220, so I’m really happy about that.  There is typically a woosh the week or two after switching to low carb as the carbs and such leave the body so I wasn’t terribly surprised but still happy.  Here’s hoping the progress continues.
