October Keto Krate!

Happy Halloween to me; my October Keto Krate came in with all it’s goodies (including some Good Dee’s, lol).

As before, I have unboxing and product images and info so stop here if you don’t want spoilers.  I’ll share my initial thoughts, if any, and then as I try each product I’ll add a review.

Good Dee’s Chocolate Cake Mix – 2g net carbs for 1/12 of the cake

www.GoodDees.com

I’ve had a cookie mix from this company before and they were pretty good.  They’re one of the few products I’ve had that produced the cooling sensation due to the carb-free sweetener used and I didn’t care for that.  I’m hoping the cake will be as tasty and without that effect (although mint chocolate might work better than with snickerdoodle).

I baked this cake and made a “denser” cake by adding an additional egg to the mix.  I also added a chopped up Coco Polo chocolate bar.  I thought it came out quite good, a good texture and decent sized pieces when cut into 12.  I purchased some sugar free frosting to go with it and it’s quite good that way.  I’m also planning to heat some and try it with some Halo Top ice cream and maybe try some with peanut butter.  Would recommend.

Sweetwood Bully Jalapeno Beef Bar – 1g net carb per bar

www.Sweetwood.com

This bar looks tempting, it’s flexible and looks softer than jerky and easier to eat.  It reminds me of a beef stick without the casing.  Unfortunately, it’s Jalapeno flavor and hot and I don’t get along so I’ll have to find someone else to try it and let me know.  They do have other flavors and products so I might have to get a couple to try as it looks good.

Big John’s Original Beef Jerky – 1g net carbs for about 1/3 of the bag

BigJohnsBeefJerky.com

To be honest, it just looks like regular jerky and maybe a little dry.  I like jerky though, and will definitely try it.  The description says it’s hickory smoked, so that sounds good.

Nush Banana Nut Cake – 3g net carbs for 1 cake

www.NushFoods.com

I’m pretty sure I’ve had one of these in a Keto Krate before, this same flavor too, and didn’t care for it.  That said, it does sound tempting as banana bread was always a favorite (although without nuts).

I still don’t care for this cake.  It has a different texture that doesn’t sit with me (I am a texture eater) and just seems artificial.  I’ll have a Know foods product any day.

Legendary Foods Buffalo Blue Wing Seasoned Almonds – 3g net carbs/bag

LegendaryFoodsOnline.com

I’ve never tried them but I’m pretty sure buffalo wings are also hot.  That said, I’m intrigued and will probably eat one just to try it out.  If it’s the flavor without the heat I think it could be pretty good.  The description states they have other savory flavors as well, which sounds exciting, along with nut butters in various flavors.

Raw Rev Creamy Peanut Butter & Sea Salt Bar – 3g net carbs

www.RawRev.com

I think I’ve had this before as well and also didn’t care for it.  I don’t usually like protein bars and it seems like this had the usual, dense texture.  That said, the package did feel gooey and creamy so I’m hoping I’m confusing it with something else.

Protes Toasted Coconut Protein Chips – 4g net carbs/bag

www.EatProtes.com

I’m always excited to find a new chip substitute and am excited to try these out (although coconut is a weird flavor so will have to find something it’ll go with).  Also, mine feel like they’ve all been crushed by the BBQ sauce so I think it’s more chip bits than actual chips.  Even better, these are only $1.99/bag, which is about on par with normal chips.

Guy’s Original BBQ Sauce – 2g net carbs / 2T

It’s definitely hard to find a good, low carb BBQ sauce so I’m definitely excited for this.  Since so much of what I eat is 0g carbs, it’s a little hard to give up 2g for a bit of flavoring but could definitely be a treat (or marinade).

This is definitely something I’d buy again and, to me, the best item in this month’s Krate.  It is a little tangy but also sweet without overpowering the meat or other foods.  Also, 2T is a generous amount to add to a piece of meat and I didn’t have issues without having enough (or you could always add more for 1g net carbs per T).

July Keto Krate

Christmas in July!  My Keto Krate arrived today and it’s always a highlight of my month, with so many new low carb options to explore.  The hard part is always deciding what to try first, or not trying it all at once.

All of the included products, along with some basic info is listed below, along with my initial thoughts, and I’ll add in reviews as I try each item.

Fat Snax – Peanut Butter Cookies

6 total carbs – 2 fat and 3 sugar alcohols = 1 net carb per cookie (2 cookies per package)

These look really good and I selected them as the first item to try.  Peanut Butter have always been my favorite type of cookie, although I would usually eat half the dough before cooking.  They’re also fairly high in fat, thus the name, with 9g, so they should be filling.

My expectations may have been too high, as nothing compares to real cookies.  These were not as light as I would hope but were nice and soft.  They were not as sweet as normal cookies and the peanut butter flavor could have been stronger.  Also, some of the peanut bits were salty, which some might like but was a little odd to me for a cookie.  TL:DR – I’d eat them again but probably won’t purchase any.

Keto Brownie – Chocolate Almond Crunch

20 total carbs – 16 fiber = 4 net carbs

These also look really good and the main ingredient is almond butter, which I do like and increases my hopes for this.  The summary states there are no GMO’s or sugar alcohols, which is good if those don’t agree with you.  I didn’t select it as my first as the name of “Nutrition Bar” makes it sound more like a meal replacement than a dessert and I’d already had dinner.  I’m typically disappointed by “protein bars” so I’m hoping this turns out well.

This was okay, more dark-chocolaty than I expected.  It had occasional chunks for texture, which was nice.  It was a little oily but not too bad.  I ate mine with some peanut butter and it was pretty good that way.

Quest Nutrition – Chocolate Cereal Bar

17 total carbs – 7 fiber & 8 Allulose = 2 net carbs

This the the third crate in a row that included one of these cereal protein bars, one of each flavor, and I’m not mad.  I bought a whole batch of these after the first one so I’ve already tried this and know it’s pretty good, as are the other flavors.  This is actually one of the only protein bars I’ve enjoyed eating and would buy again, rather than just getting through; the cereal texture really makes a difference.

I had this with some peanut butter too, lol.  I still really like these new Quest Cereal bars.  They are a bit on the sweet side but have really great flavor and a completely different texture than typical protein bars.  These are much more reminiscent of actual cereal/breakfast bars.

Limited Labs – Strawberry Lemonade Sports Drink

0 total carbs so 0 net carbs

The description states this is “The first ready-to-drink form of exogenous ketones” and suggests drinking it in the morning, before or during training, or when you need to focus.  The bottle also suggest drinking before a workout.  It also says this drink will help you get back into ketosis.  I went ahead and threw it into the fridge and am excited about the flavor, it sounds like it’ll taste good.  I might save for next time I cheat and need to get back at it.

This came in handy as I had a carby day last Sunday when my brother ordered pizza.  I had this as a mid-morning drink on Monday.  The flavor is good but strong, to where I made a face and shook my head on the first few sips.  I poured about half a cup of water into mine and that helped a lot.  This followed some BPC so it didn’t sit well on the otherwise empty stomach but it was okay.  No weird grainy or powdery mouth-feel to it.

Keto Love – Carrot Cake Almond Butter

8 total carbs – 4 fiber = 4 net carbs

This sounds delicious and I definitely need to get a low carb bagel out of the freezer to try it on.  The description says this brand, started by two sisters, has a variety of nut-based, keto friendly products so that is a website I’ll be checking out.

DiMario Foods – Garlic and Fennel Pork Stick

1 total carb – no fiber or SA = 1 net carb

While an interesting sounding flavor, I’ve never been a huge fan of beef sticks.  These sound good though and I’ll definitely give it a shot.

SuperPowered Nutrition – Original Steak Strip

1 total carb – no fiber or SA = 1 net carb

The description on these say they’re similar to jerky but more tender.  I’m super excited as I do like jerky and tender jerky sounds awesome.  I’d be happier if I’d received the “original” flavor though – mine was “Spirit Fire (Jalapeno)) and spicy and I don’t get along with spicy.  I’ll still have to try it though.

Pizootz – Bay Spice Peanuts

7.25 total carbs – 2.9 fiber = 4.35 net carbs (the whole bag is one serving and is a good size)

I’ve received these once before, a different flavor, and still haven’t opened them.  I’m not much of a peanut eater (despite the peanut butter addiction) and flavored ones don’t help, unless it’s honey roasted.  I’ll work to give these a shot as I’m curious what flavor Bay Spice really is.

Front Porch Pecans – Habanero BBQ Pecans

4 total carbs – 3 fiber = 1 net carb for 14 pieces (4 servings in the bag)

I received these in a prior krate as well, but just salted.  They were delicious and I think I ate the whole thing over two days.  I’ll probably try these but won’t get far due to the habanero flavor and my aversion to spicy foods.  I’ll definitely use the coupon code to purchase some other flavors though.

The insert with descriptions and info:

Recipe:

I like that they’re now including just a general low carb recipe, instead of trying to incorporate one of the krate items.

Bonus:

I noticed this nutrition label on the back of the box and thought it was cute.

February Keto Krate

I was very excited to find February’s Keto Krate on my front porch this morning.  I was especially excited when I saw the new packaging on the outside as I knew they’d been working on a redesign.  The inside did not disappoint either.

Adapt Bar

The Adapt Chocolate Brownie bar was the featured item this month.  It is one net carb for the whole bar (info which is now included on the new info insert, yay) and the recipe on the back of the insert uses it in a yummy looking ice cream recipe that I might have to try.  They retail for $1.99 and can be found at www.adaptyourlife.com.

Grandpa’s Jerky – Original Cajun Jerky

The insert says original cajun but my package says cajun style mesquite, which I think sounds better although I’m concerned about cajun meaning spicy either way.  This is one net carb per serving, which is about 4 pieces or half the bag and retails for $11.  This and 6 other flavors can be found at grandpasjerky.net.

As expected, this was way too hot for me.  I took one bite and gave the rest to my brother.  I wasn’t impressed with the jerky itself, it’s in thin little strips and so tough I could barely bite off a piece.  Initially you taste the mesquite flavor, which is nice, but then the cajun kicks in and it gets pretty warm (it’s been a few minutes and I can still feel it).

Curly Girlz Candy – Coconut Macadamia Bites

This box of 4 candies looks delicious and, according to the insert, they have a whole line of sugar free candies and use natural ingredients when possible.  Two candies are only 1 net carb and there are 2 servings (so 4 candies) in a box (good thing they’re only 1 net carb per serving because I doubt I’ll be able to just eat two instead of all 4).  These can be found at curlygirlzcandy.com and retail for $8.99.

Of course I had to try these on day one.  They are basically chocolate covered caramels with little pieces of coconut and macadamia nut mixed in with the caramel center.  I thought they were very good, a bit hard and chewy.  I really liked that I could taste all the flavors, including both the coconut and macadamia.  I think they’re a bit pricey for everyday but would be a good occasional treat.

Gorilly Goods – Hillside Pumpkin Seeds and Kale

This snack package contains 2 servings at 2 net carbs per serving.  I think it sounds good although I’ve tried dried kale before and wasn’t a fan since it was chewy, depending on the texture of it here, it could be good.  The company works with fair trade partners and uses 100% renewable energy to power their business plus donate a portion of all profit to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund so it’s one I would like to support.  This retails for $2.50 at gorillygoods.com.

I thought this was pretty good.  Despite the picture, I was expecting separate chunks of the kale from the pumpkin seeds but, like the picture, the kale is attached.  The added spices also give it a nice flavor and I was able to stop myself at one serving, half the bag.   I shared with some coworkers and neither of them liked it but I did.  I just rolled the bag up on itself so I’m curious to see if the remainder becomes soggy or not.

KZ Clean Eating – Chocolate Bar

According to the insert, this company only sells low carb items so it definitely sounds like one I’ll be looking into.  This chocolate bar is only 2 net carbs per serving and each bar has 5 servings, so probably 1 row is a serving.  They retail for 6.99 at kzcleaneating.com.

I was slightly off, each bar has six rows, not five, so the servings are a bit weird (how do you eat a fifth of the bar, eat one row plus half a square?).  It was REALLY good, super creamy and sweet and I could definitely taste the caramel.  There were little crunchy bits, I’m guessing the salt, spread throughout which gave it a different texture but I didn’t notice any super salty bites.  I will definitely be checking out their site to order more.

Roam Sticks – Hickory Smoked Pork w/Uncured Bacon

The insert states Roam uses non-GMO, pasture raised pok.  There’s no nutritional information on the package but the insert says it’s 1 net carb per serving, which I’m assuming is the whole stick.  Find them at roamsticks.com for $2.99.

This was actually quite good.  I’d been concerned as I’m not a fan of the Jack Links type of thing but was impressed.  It had a good pork flavor and was not overwhelming on the spices.  It wasn’t too hard or chewy; I had it with a stick of cheese and it was just right.

SuperSeedz – Somewhat Spicy Pumpkin Seeds

This snack package has 5 servings of pumpkin seeds at only 2 net carbs per serving.  I actually have SuperSeedz in several flavors (the chocolate is great) so I know these are pretty good.  I’m not a fan of spicy but enjoy the product in general.  These retail for $4.99 at superzeeds.com.

I’m giving my package to a coworker but did try some of my existing package.  These have a good flavor, earthy and savory, and the spices work with the flavor of the pumpkin seeds well.  They are only slightly spicy, even sensitive me can stand to eat a little bit, but the spice hits more in the back of the throat instead of the mouth and lingers for a bit.

Keto Krate’s new insert

Overall I like the new insert.  It now contains additional information about the products in a nice, orderly, and clearly defined fashion.  Each item has a row, in alternating colors, except for the featured item, which has the whole first page.  In this case, the featured item also has the whole back in the form of a recipe using the item in an ice cream.  It unfolding to such a long sheet is a bit ungainly but overall I like it better.  Since they now have so much room on the back. maybe they can start including multiple recipes.

January Keto Krate

Maybe it’s because it’s January and there’s lots of New Year Resolution members, but I have to say this Keto Krate is the best one yet.  I was quite thrilled with everything in it and the box was fully packed, hardly any paper stuffing at all.

As before, I’ll go ahead and add info on each product for now and will add reviews as I try things.  I want to try everything at once so those reviews will likely come pretty quick.

Keto and Co. Chocolate Brownie Mix

This month’s featured product in the box.  According to the blurb, this is a new company with a wide variety of low-carb or keto versions of what you’ve had to give up when you joined this WOE.  Personally I feel like this one is a bit misleading as it shows real big on the front that it’s only 1.3 net carbs, but that’s for 100 calories.  The nutrition label shows the mix makes 9 brownies at 230 calories each so it’s really about 6 total and 3 net carbs per brownie.  That’s still really good and they could’ve just said that.  This mix retails for $11.49 and can be found at Ketoand.co along with their other products.

I have to say I wasn’t really a fan of this mix.  The resulting brownies are a bit dense and the sweetener gives a different taste/aftertaste.  In general they’re chocolaty and sweet but not something I’d go out of my way to purchase over making it from scratch.  I did have it with Halo Top ice cream and that was pretty good.

Pork Clouds Malabar Black Pepper

I’ve heard of the Pork Clouds brand and have been interested in trying them for some time but they always seemed a bit pricey, mostly because I only see them on Amazon and to get a sampler of multiple flavors really adds us.  While black pepper isn’t the first flavor I’d have chosen, I’m still really excited to try these out.  Each 1/2 oz. serving is 0 total and net carbs and there are 4 servings in this 4 oz. bag.  A bag retails for $4 ad BaconsHeir.com (awesome company name).

I finally tried these and was pleased that the pepper wasn’t overpowering.  On the other hand, they’re basically just pork rinds and I didn’t identify anything special over the cheap ones I can get at the store except being a little finer.  I used these as chips with a white queso dip and they were the perfect snack.  While I might not spend the extra to but these special, I definitely wouldn’t turn them down.

Braaitime Droewors

I was really excited to see another Droewors product; they had the Ayoba Yo meat sticks in a previous Krate and I’ve been buying them ever since.  I was happy with the Dried Beef Sausage flavor until I saw the included card said Chorizo, so now I’m envious of those that got the Chorizo flavor.  The flavor I got is 1 total and net carb per oz. and there are 2 oz. in the bag, so half a bag is only 1 carb.  These retail for $7 at Braaitime.com.

I’ve previously had the Ayoba Yo Droewors from an earlier Keto Krate and these tasted just the same to me.  I didn’t detect any sausage flavor, mostly just a savory beef flavor.  I did end up tasting it most of the night afterwards as well.  In my opinion, the Ayoba Yo ones were much easier to eat and these were a bit tougher (although still not as tough as actual jerky).  Also, these came in at .5 carb per stick where the Ayoba Yo brand is 0 carbs per stick (if I remember correctly).

Seabear Wild Alaskan King Salmon Jerky

I’d never even heard of salmon jerky so this was a real surprise.  It’s in a resealable pack, which is nice.  Definitely going to try this soon and there was also a flier where you can get more free with a large enough purchase, which shouldn’t be hard to do; another perk of Keto Krate.  This is <1 total/net carb per oz. and only 1.25 oz. in the package so I’m guessing about 1 carb for the whole thing.  These retail for $7.99 at SeaBear.com.

I tried these today and didn’t think they were too bad.  They’re a bit harder than I expected, you definitely have to chew them like jerky, and didn’t have much of a fishy taste to me.  Overall they just tasted like jerky.

Innocent Chocolate Chocolate Bar

Another surprise brand I’d never heard of and the claims on the front of the package are interesting.  The info sheet adds that 100% of profits are shared with EarthCorp Foundation for environmental preservation, which is another reason to buy.  The nutrition label was a little confusing with 7 total carbs but 7 fiber and 4 sugar alcohols (which is more than total carbs but I’m guessing they didn’t count the sugar alcohols toward the total) but it ultimately comes out to 0 net carbs for half of the bar.  The info sheet also says shakes and puddings coming soon, so definitely one to watch.  These retail for $4.99 at InnocentChocolate.com.

Chocolate would have to be the first thing I try from the Krate.  It is a very good dark chocolate.  It’s quite hard, almost difficult to bite, and very dark.  Their website shows lots of promising new items coming, including a 66% cocoa and snack size bars, that I’m excited to try.

LC Foods Snack Pack

Keto Krate has included LC Foods snack packs before and after last time I purchased a wide variety of their products so I can personally vouch for these snack packs and bread (the multigrain loaf is just like real bread, awesome).  I have a few mixes I still need to try but they have a ton of great low carb options.  The info sheet said this should’ve been Chocolate Covered Pecans, which I would have preferred over the Spicy Pepitas & Jack Cheese simply because I’m sensitive to spicy stuff.  I’ve tried their other snack packs like this and the dried cheese really adds a savory element to it so hopefully this isn’t too spicy and I can eat it.  This is 3.5 total and 2 net carbs for a half of the package (with others, it has been pretty filling and I have been able to stop after just half the pack and not eat the whole thing).  These are $2.50 and can be found at HoldTheCarbs.com along with lots of other items.

I was pleased that these were not too spicy for me to eat.  They definitely had a kick to them and my lips were warm for a good time after but I was able to eat half of the package, one serving.  I gave the other half to a coworker and she thought they were good as well.  Again, the dried cheese included in these just give them that extra boost in flavor, they’re great.

Xyloburst Grape Fruit Sours

The first time I’ve seen mints/candy featured since joining but according to the info sheet these do not have any sucralose, maltitol, or aspartame and are only sweetened with xylitol.  They also offer xylitol sweetened gum, lollipops, and jams.  These are 0 net carbs for 2 pieces and there are 50 2-piece servings in the tin.  They retail for $3.59 at FocusNutrition.com

These were not what I was expecting but were still good.  They definitely had a grape flavor but were crumbly and just melted away in your mouth, while I was expecting to crunch them like a mint.  They were a nice, fresh treat though.

Keto Krate Info Sheet

Here they include a little blurb about each item along with the price and website.  A new feature I really like is that on the back they’ve included a recipe you can make with some of the items included in your Krate, really cool.

December Keto Krate

In October I subscribed to Keto Krate as a way to discover and try new low carb goodies.  So far it’s been great and last month I ordered more of at least half of what came in the Krate.  I’m looking forward to trying the things that came this month.

As I try each item, I’ll add flavor reviews.  Each image currently has carb counts.

December Keto Krate Goodies

Keto Carne Original Recipe Beef Jerky – 0 carbs per oz

I ended up giving this to my aunt, who also does low carb/paleo.  I can’t really do spicy and didn’t want to open it to try just to have it go to waste.  If she gets back to me on it, I’ll share her thoughts.

Primal Kitchen Chipotle Lime Mayo – 0 net carbs per tablespoon

Now this is chocolate.  Very milk-chocolate flavor, with a dark chocolate undertone, and nice and creamy.  It even melts in your mouth as you eat it, which dark doesn’t really do.  Half a bar is a serving but there’s 5 rows of 3 so not too easy to halve.  I ate two rows and was satisfied.

Coco Polo Milk Chocolate – 5 net carbs for 1/2 bar

These are a great chip substitute.  I ate them with some queso on New Year’s Eve and didn’t feel like I was missing out at all.  They likely have other flavors but this one was pretty good and very flavorful.

Foods Alive Mexican Harvest Flax Crackers – 4 net carbs for 5 crackers, 4 servings per bag

My brother actually really liked these.  I thought they had good flavor also.  I’ve heard a lot about the “cooling effect” caused by some sweeteners and hadn’t experienced it until now, they definitely feel like you’re having a mint along with the snickerdoodle flavor.  My brother thought it was on purpose and liked that about them but I didn’t really care for it.

Good Dee’s Snickerdoodle Cookie Mix – 12 cookies, 2 net carbs/cookie

This was pretty good.  The overall flavor is of the caramel, you don’t really notice the nuts other than a little crunchiness.  The chocolate reminds me more of chocolate flavoring, like the chocolate in Sixlets or knock-off M&Ms.  In general, I like ChocoRite’s offerings and have bought several of their flavors.  They have a good milk chocolate and the peanut butter and crispy bars are both really good.
